What is Video counselling

Video counselling works in much the same way as face to face counselling does. It is helpful to ensure you have a private, quiet setting where you feel safe and comfortable for the duration of the session. You may want to use headphones with a microphone for the conversation.

How long is a virtual therapy session?

The session is the same length as an in-person counselling session (50 mins) and will be carried out through a platform of your choice. We will be online at the same time. If you prefer you can chose not to use the camera and we will work together as if we were talking on the telephone (voice counselling).

How does voice or video chat counselling work?

It’s fine to use a phone or common video chat apps like Skype or FaceTime. If you would like to ensure the session is through an encrypted platform I would recommend we use Signal or VSee – both of which are very secure, free to use and easy to download on your phone, tablet or PC.

The most important thing is to find a space where you feel comfortable, able to talk freely (i.e. use earphones) and – if it’s a video call, ensure you have a fast, stable internet connection.

If you’re wondering ‘is virtual therapy as effective as being there in-person, you don’t have to commit to just one of the options. A number of my regular face-to-face clients will make use of text, video or voice or therapy sessions when they are in isolation, travelling or on holiday, while some clients start in one medium – such as email – and transition to video or voice.  You can find out more about online counselling vs face-to-face counselling here >
